Planning for an ageing population

It is widely recognised that the UK is underprepared to meet the needs of its ageing population. Currently, there are more than 12 million over- 65s in the UK, and this figure is expected to increase by 50% over the next 20 years. Looking at the societal challenges we face, there has been a fundamental failure to address the specific housing, health and care needs of this demographic.

There has been a dearth of supply in housing-with-care in the UK. Figures suggest that only 7,000 units are being delivered to market each year, the disparity between supply and demand is vast. With a backdrop of massive social and economic benefits that this type of housing brings[1], government should be the driving force in increasing delivery of this type of housing to market. The reality is the reverse. In the UK, delivery of housing-with-care is stifled by our planning system.
